The Retriever Program builds on the skills taught in our Foundations for Success obedience training, creating a dependable dog both at home and in the field. Dogs progress through trained retrieve, whistle commands, handling, steadiness, and land and water retrieves. Each step is designed to develop confidence, control, and a strong working partnership between the dog and owner.

Retriever Training Progression
We believe dependable retrievers are built one day at a time. Our goal is to build a dog that is enjoyable at home, useful in the field, and gets you invited back on the hunting trip next year. This timeline gives owners a practical look at how the program progresses from basic obedience to more advanced retriever work.
Month One: Obedience and Retrieving Foundations
The first month is about building good habits and a clear working relationship between the dog and handler. Dogs work on basic obedience, including sit, place, heel, recall, and steadiness, while beginning the trained retrieve process. We also introduce real birds, live gunfire, and simple singles on land and water.
Month Two: Finishing the Trained Retrieve and Starting Pile Work
During month two, we finish the trained retrieve so the dog will reliably pick up, hold, carry, and deliver a bird or bumper to hand. Once that foundation is in place, we begin pile work, teaching the dog to leave the handler, carry a straight line, and retrieve from a known area. Dogs continue developing their obedience, steadiness, confidence around real birds and gunfire, and singles on land and water.
Month Three: Introducing Mini-T and Casting
During month three, we introduce the ideas behind Mini-T. Dogs begin learning the whistle sit, basic left, right, and back casts, and how to take direction from the handler. We continue pile work, singles, land and water retrieves, steadiness, and marking, with the goal of developing a solid Junior/Started-level dog and the foundation needed for more advanced handling.
Month Four: Pattern Lines and Introduction to Doubles
During month four, dogs build on the handling skills introduced through pile work and Mini-T. We introduce pattern lines and simple pattern blinds while continuing to improve the whistle sit and basic casting. Dogs also begin doubles, learning to watch and remember more than one fall while continuing to sharpen their steadiness, marking, and delivery.
Month Five: Building Doubles and Handling
During month five, we increase the difficulty of doubles, pattern lines, and blind retrieve work. Dogs learn to hold their line through cover, changes in terrain, and different water entries while responding more consistently to the whistle sit and casts. Training begins to look more like the situations the dog will see while hunting or running a Seasoned/Senior-level test.
Month Six: Seasoned/Senior-Level Development
During month six, we put the pieces together in more complete land and water setups. Dogs work on doubles, blind retrieves, handling, steadiness, difficult entries and exits, changing cover, and greater distractions from birds, gunfire, and other dogs. The goal is to develop a dependable hunting retriever that can mark birds, take direction from the handler, and work toward Seasoned/Senior-level expectations.
Every dog progresses differently. Age, maturity, natural ability, water confidence, previous training, and the owner’s goals all affect the exact pace and results of the program.
